Ingredients:
- 5-6 strips of bacon
- 1 head cabbage, thinly sliced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- ¼ cup chicken broth (preferably low sodium)
- 1 teaspoon vinegar (optional)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Directions:
- In a large skillet, preferably cast iron, fry the bacon until it turns crispy. Remove the bacon strips and place them on a paper towel to drain excess grease.
- In the same skillet with the rendered bacon fat, add the chopped cabbage and onion. Sauté over medium heat until they start to soften and wilt slightly.
- Crumble the cooked bacon and sprinkle it over the cabbage and onion mixture in the skillet.
- Pour in the chicken broth and add vinegar (if using), salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine.
- Cover the skillet and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Serve the Southern Fried Cabbage hot. For variation, consider adding diced apples, sliced sausage, noodles, or any other desired ingredients before serving. Enjoy!
